Ten questions to ask any Goa venue before you sign

Why a checklist, from a studio that hates checklists

Because venue quotes in Goa are structured to be compared on the wrong number. Two properties quote "₹4,000 a plate" and one wedding costs twice the other — the difference lives in the contract lines nobody reads aloud on the site visit. These are the ten questions we put to venues on every wedding we take on, with what each answer tells you. The charging-model mechanics behind them are in the buyout and minimum-guarantee guide.

The money questions

1. What is the minimum guarantee on my date?

Hotels bill a minimum number of plates regardless of attendance: 200 guests against a 300-plate minimum pays for 300. The published per-plate rate barely moves; the unpublished minimum moves a lot — on dates the hotel is unlikely to sell twice, we have seen it drop by a third in a conversation. This is the first number to get in writing, and the first to negotiate.

2. What counts as a plate?

Children, vendor crews and your photographer's team all eat. Whether they bill at full rate, half rate or a working-meal rate depends entirely on whether the contract says so. Hotels agree to these carve-outs routinely and volunteer them almost never.

3. What is the room-block rate, and what is the release date?

The block should price below the public rate, and it must carry a release date — the date unclaimed rooms return to the hotel at no charge. A block without one bills you for every empty room. At a two-night minimum, rooms are frequently the largest line in a Goa wedding budget, so this clause outranks most of the decor conversation. The sizing arithmetic is in the room-block guide.

4. What is the minimum stay?

Two nights is the Goa norm in season; some properties hold out for three across Christmas week. The answer changes your guests' cost as much as yours, and it varies by month, which is one quiet reason October quotes read so differently from December ones.

The rules questions

5. What is your position on sound after 10pm?

Amplified music outdoors stops at 10pm across Goa. The venues that host well have an indoor room ready and treat the move as part of the night's design; the venues that shrug at the question are telling you the after-party is your problem. Ask to see the indoor space at the same visit.

6. What does your own licence already cover on the beach?

For a beach ceremony, the panchayat decides what stands on the sand — and some of the file may already be covered by the venue's own licences. What is not covered is your application, on the panchayat's calendar, opening six to eight weeks out. The venue knows exactly where that line sits for its own stretch of sand; make it say so. 7. What is the overtime rate, in writing?

Every wedding believes it will end on time and several do not. The per-hour figure after licensed hours is a small line to ask for now and a shocking one to discover at 11pm on the night.

The fine-print questions

8. What is the outside-vendor policy, and the royalty?

"Panel decorator only" is a price you have not seen yet, and where outside vendors are allowed, a royalty often rides on them. Since our design and production are in-house, this clause is one we negotiate on every contract — and couples using any independent vendor should too.

9. Where does my wedding go if it rains?

Not "do you have a backup" — walk the actual room. Between November and March the question is nearly theoretical; in October, and for any covered-season date, the wet-weather space is part of what you are buying and deserves the same scrutiny as the lawn. 10. What does this exact quote become in December?

Ask even if you are not marrying in December, because the answer reveals how the venue prices. Christmas week rates can run to double, minimums rise with them, and a venue that answers this question plainly will answer the other nine plainly too.

What the answers add up to

A venue that answers all ten in writing is a venue you can budget honestly. The four that decide the most money: the minimum guarantee, the release date, the minimum stay, and the outside-vendor royalty. Get those four before you fall in love with a lawn — the lawn will still be there after the contract reads clean.
