How many rooms does your wedding actually need?

It is the first number a Goa venue will ask you for and the last one most couples work out. Here is the arithmetic we run on every wedding, before anyone talks rates.
The method
Start with the guest list and divide by 2.2. Couples and families share; a portion of any Indian guest list is singles, elders who need their own room, and the two families' inner circles who cannot be doubled up. Dividing by two pretends everyone pairs perfectly. They do not, and the difference lands on you at check-in.
Then add a buffer of 15 per cent. It absorbs the cousin who confirms in the last week, the makeup team that stays over, and the room the photographer's crew needs on the wedding night. On every wedding we run, some of the buffer gets used. On most of them, all of it does.
How many hotel rooms do you need for an Indian wedding?
Divide the guest count by 2.2 and add 15 per cent. A 100-guest wedding needs about 52 rooms, 150 guests need about 78, 250 guests need about 130, and 400 guests need about 210. Goa venues sell wedding rooms on two-night minimums, so the real unit of cost is room-nights: rooms × 2.

Two-night minimums are the Goa norm in season, and some properties hold out for three across Christmas week. This is why the accommodation block is frequently the largest line in a Goa wedding budget — larger than food. The cost guide shows where it sits against everything else.
When the venue cannot sleep everyone
A venue's room count decides whether your wedding lives in one place or two. Under roughly two guests per room on site, the overflow sleeps at a neighbouring property, and you have bought yourself a shuttle plan and a harder morning muhurtham. The venue book carries room counts for every property we have confirmed them at; these are the five-star blocks that take a full wedding without overflow:

The three refinements that change the answer
Who pays decides who books. If the family hosts the rooms, negotiate the block as one contract with a release date for unclaimed rooms. If guests pay their own way, the venue will want a smaller committed block and the overflow risk moves to your guests — send them the booking link early, because the hotel will not hold rooms on goodwill in December.
Elders and the bridal side sleep close. We hold the rooms nearest the venue lawns for grandparents and the getting-ready suites, before the block opens to everyone else. It costs nothing and saves the wedding morning.
Vendors need beds too. Photography crews, makeup, the sangeet band: plan four to eight rooms outside the guest count, cheaper category, same property if you can. A crew sleeping forty minutes away is a crew that is late.

How many rooms do I need for 150 wedding guests?
About 78 rooms. Divide 150 by 2.2 for roughly 68 rooms of genuine sharing, then add 15 per cent buffer for late confirmations, crew and odd-numbered families. At a two-night minimum that is around 156 room-nights, which is why accommodation is usually the biggest line in a Goa wedding budget.
Do Goa hotels insist on a minimum stay for wedding blocks?
In season, yes — two nights is standard and Christmas week often runs to three. Outside season some properties will sell single nights, which is one of the quieter reasons October and monsoon weddings cost less.
What happens to rooms my guests do not fill?
It depends on the contract. A block with a release date returns unclaimed rooms to the hotel a set number of weeks before the wedding at no charge; a committed block bills you either way. We negotiate release dates into every block we book, and the date is the thing to check before signing.
Should we book the whole hotel?
If the guest list is close to what the property sleeps, often yes — exclusive use removes strangers from your photographs and the sound-curfew conversation changes when there are no other guests to disturb. How buyouts are priced is its own subject: see our guide to buyouts and minimum guarantees.
