Beach weddings

Getting married on a beach in Goa

It is the reason most couples come to Goa, and it has more moving parts than any other kind of wedding we run.

The short answer

The ceremony happens on the sand and the reception moves to the property behind it. What you may build on the beach, and how late it may run, is set by the village panchayat that stretch belongs to — not by the resort. Two beaches ten minutes apart can give you two different answers, so it is settled before you sign, not after.

Choose the beach before the resort

Couples usually do this backwards: pick the hotel, then discover what the beach in front of it will and will not allow. The sand comes first. South Goa's long stretches — Benaulim through to Mobor — hold big ceremonies because there is room. The north is more dramatic and more crowded, and the far north at Ashwem and Mandrem is where the small private ones go.

Build for wind, not for photographs

Every beach set-up in Goa is a wind problem before it is a design problem. Anything tall gets weighted below the sand line, florals get chosen for stems that will not shred by six o'clock, and the aisle runs so the sea breeze crosses the guests rather than the celebrant's microphone.

The tide decides your ceremony time

A high tide at six in the evening can take back a third of the ceremony ground you measured that morning. We set ceremony times against the tide table for your date, which is also how you end up with the sun where you want it in the photographs.

Questions about beach weddings

Do you need permission for a beach wedding in Goa?

Yes. What you can put on the sand — a structure, a sound system, chairs, how late it runs — is decided by the village panchayat that stretch of beach belongs to, and the answer genuinely differs between beaches ten minutes apart. It is worth settling before you commit to a venue rather than after.

Which beaches in Goa are best for a wedding?

The long, wide beaches of South Goa — Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim and Mobor — carry the biggest ceremonies comfortably because there is simply more empty sand. In the north, Sinquerim and the far-north stretches at Ashwem and Mandrem suit smaller weddings that want privacy.

Can the whole wedding happen on the beach?

The ceremony, yes. Dinner and the reception almost always move to the property behind it — sand is difficult to serve several hundred people on, and the sound rules end the outdoor half of the night at ten anyway.

What happens if it rains?

Between November and March it effectively does not. Outside those months every beach ceremony we plan carries a covered fallback that can be called on the morning of the day.
